US sales tax · 46 states + DC
You crossed Texas eleven days ago.
Economic nexus doesn't announce itself. TaxEqual measures your Shopify sales against every state's own threshold, tells you before the state does, and hands you the numbers your return asks for.
- Free plan, no card. 14-day trial on paid plans.
- Read-only access. Customer data encrypted; ZIP code never stored.
What it does
Four things, each of which is a full-time job by hand.
Nexus
Every threshold, watched continuously
Each state's rule in its own terms — sales, transactions, the AND or the OR between them, and the measurement window it actually uses. You are warned as you approach, and again when you cross — in the app and by email.
Collected tax
What your store charged, line by line
Every order line is placed in its destination state and grouped by product category, carrying the tax your sales channel charged and every locality it named. The figures on a return are what you actually collected — nothing estimated, nothing re-rated.
Returns
Reports shaped like the return
Per state, per filing period, on that state's own frequency and due dates — a summary, the split by product category, the local schedule of every locality your store charged, and the transactions behind each figure. Export as CSV, Excel or PDF and file straight from it.
Coverage
Sales we don't see still count
Marketplace orders already remitted by the channel are separated out, off-platform revenue is folded in, and multiple stores under one entity roll up together — because that is how a state measures you.
How it works
Three steps, then it runs without you.
Connect
Install, choose a start date, and orders, refunds, products and locations sync from that date on. No code, no theme changes.
- Start date up to 12 months back, on every plan
- Older history by import, up to 24 months at a time
Watch
We track every taxing state and DC against your real sales and tell you where you stand — in the app and by email, before a deadline rather than after one.
- Approaching and crossed alerts
- Returns due and overdue reminders
Export and file
Open the period, check the breakdown, export it, file it with the state yourself, then mark it filed. The history stays, so any state can be reconciled later.
- CSV, Excel and PDF, filing-ready
- Filing history per state
Coverage
Every taxing state, one view.
Forty-six states and the District of Columbia — Alaska through its local commission — each measured against its own threshold on the window its law uses: calendar year, prior year or trailing twelve months. The ones that need you are the ones that change color.
- Registered
- Threshold met
- Approaching
- Below threshold
- No statewide sales tax
Illustrative — your own map is built from your orders.

Questions
The things merchants ask before installing.
Do you file and pay my returns for me?
No — and we would rather say so plainly than imply otherwise. TaxEqual prepares the figures, the local schedule of what your store charged and the filing calendar; you submit the return and pay the state. Registering with a state is also yours to do. We are compliance software, not a filing agent, and not tax advice.
Why Shopify only?
Because a connector that treats every platform the same is how order data gets flattened and figures land on the wrong return. We read Shopify's own order, refund, product and location data directly — including the tax it charged on every line and which orders a marketplace already remitted on.
How far back can it go?
When you install you choose a start date up to twelve months back, on every plan, and everything the app reports is bounded by it — so a zero always means no sales, never no data. Nexus looks further on its own, from the start of last year, because thresholds are judged on windows that opened before you installed. Need older periods? Starter and Pro can import further back in windows of up to 24 months, $5 per import.
What access does it need?
Read-only access to orders — including orders older than 60 days, which Shopify approves separately — refunds, products and locations, plus Shopify's Protected Customer Data approval: without a ship-to state there is no way to tell which state's return a sale belongs on. We never write to your store.
What happens to customer data?
Less than you might expect. The sync asks Shopify only for the ship-to city, state and country — never the customer's name, contact details or ZIP code — and strips anything else from a webhook before it is saved. The city and the raw order payload are encrypted at rest; only the state and country codes stay readable, because a return is grouped by them. Shopify's customer-erasure requests are honored automatically.
What if I've already been collecting tax in a state?
The app notices tax already charged there and registers the state from the first month it saw it, so the return appears straight away rather than waiting behind a prompt. It starts on that state's default filing frequency, which you can change in Settings. From then on that state files on its own schedule alongside the others.
Does it work with Shopify Tax?
Yes — and with Basic Tax or a third-party tax engine. TaxEqual reports the tax your checkout actually charged, line by line, whichever engine charged it. It does not second-guess the amount: if a rate is set up wrongly in Shopify, the report shows that faithfully.
How is nexus measured?
On your gross sales and order count into each state — Shopify orders, off-platform sales you add, and every store you link — over the window that state's law uses. Sales made through a marketplace, which remits the tax itself, are left out unless a state's own rule counts them. Nexus is re-evaluated every night, and you are warned from 70% of a threshold.
What happens when I uninstall?
Shopify tells us, and the store's data — orders, reports, settings — is erased on the schedule Shopify's compliance webhooks set. Filing history goes with it, so export what you need first.
